Bluffton University has a delicious new way to earn Arts & Lecture credit. Every Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Berky kitchen, there will be an opportunity to learn how to prepare a new meal. Each session is student led and meant to reflect campus diversity through cooking.

The first session involved making sushi with senior social work major, Risa Fukaya. The process involved the following steps.

First, prepare the vegetables. Students began by slicing cucumber and avocado into small strips.

“The key to this whole process is to make your strips as long and skinny as possible,” said Fukaya.

Second, students were instructed to take their pre-cooked rice and evenly spread it on their nori sheets, a sheet of seaweed that makes the outer layer of your sushi roll. The rice was then topped with vegetables and seafood of your choice. Two options were provided, raw tuna and imitation crab.

Finally, students rolled their sushi into a long roll and followed by cutting it into smaller, bite-sized rolls. Ginger and soy sauce were also provided to top off sushi rolls if one wished.

The second part of the series involved making arroz con leche, also known as Mexican rice pudding. Despite the name, arroz con leche is a popular dessert made in many parts of Central and Latin America.

First, students began by boiling rice in four cups of water. Then, students peeled a lime and stirred the peel and chunks of lime into the rice and water. Students then added 4 cups of milk and continued to stir before removing the lime peel and topping off the arroz con leche with one can of condensed milk and cinnamon to taste. Once the rice was done boiling, the arroz con leche was done and ready to cool off and eat!
