Although many Bluffton students may have heard of the popular television series “Fear Factor,” very few know about the connection to Bluffton University.

Dakota Fredette, a freshman broadcast and journalism major from Arlington, Ohio, has experienced a live version of the well-known television show. “Fear Factor Live” is hosted in Orlando, Fla., and invites contestants to face their biggest fears, either by climbing steep heights, letting insects crawl on them or eating disgusting food mixtures.

Being in front of large crowds was not something new for him, and the experience also helped him decide on his choice of journalism as a major.

Fredette volunteered to eat a mixture of sour milk, rotten fish, unprocessed hotdog parts and live insects. He said volunteered for the show during spring break 2014 while on a vacation with his cousin.

When asked if he was nervous to eat the disgusting mixture in front of a crowd of 3,000, Fredette responded, “It was nerve-racking until I saw the food come out, then my focus switched from the crowd to what I had to eat.”

Although his team lost the challenge, Fredette said he would do it again as well as encourage others to try it.
