Brave Space hosts first drag show

Bluffton University’s Brave Space hosted its first drag show on Nov 18. The show was attended by over 170 people and featured six different drag queens.

Brave Space president Noah Heiing thought the show was a success.

“It was really fun to see everyone come out and support it,” said Heiing, a junior communication and media major. “Everyone had a really good time.”

Heiing was surprised by the success of the show.

“At first, it was about 30 minutes before the show and there were only five people there,” said Heiing. “But then everyone showed up and I was very pleased by the turnout.”

The event consisted of two different segments where the queens performed hosted by Redd Velvet, with an intermission where two faculty of the university competed against two students in a lip-sync battle. The battle was won by Gerald Mast, professor of communication.

The drag show was a new experience for senior middle childhood education major Edward Hardaway.

“I was hesitant to be at it because it was a different scene,” said Hardaway. “But as it got started and progressed it loosened me up. Overall, it was a very fun experience. Being in the front row and being interactive allowed me to open up and get a real feel for it.”

Heiing hopes the show becomes a new tradition for the university.

“It was a big event, and a lot of people liked it,” said Heiing.
