Friday, March 23, kicked off Marbeck’s 50th Anniversary with Cabaret for a Cause. The event featured 15 performances and raised about $1,000 for charity. Alicia Loch and Justina Fuqua served as the hosts for the event.
“It started with a group of students who want to have a student performance night to help give to another cause,” said Loch.
Every year Cabaret for a Cause has a different theme and is put on to raise money for a different charity in the area. This year, the charity was The Crossroads Crisis Center.
“Crossroads Crisis Center helps victims of domestic violence find refuge and have a safe place to go, have counseling and just keep them safe and protect them,” said Loch.
Cabaret also has a different theme every year. This year’s theme was “The Bee’s Knees,” which was based on 1920s vintage Hollywood.
“It’s a formal event,” said Loch. “Everyone dresses up, and it’s just a lot of fun to have an event to dress up and have some food and watch your fellow students perform some music they worked on or show some hidden talents you didn’t know they had.”
For this event to happen, the planning committee started meeting in the beginning of second semester to think about what was needed for the event.
“It seems like it would be really easy, but a lot of the time we have to think about who’s going to be doing what, how we’re going to pay for it, and how we’re going to get everything done in the time span,” said Loch. “We start planning at the beginning of second semester, and we usually have Bob’s Place reserved already.”
Not only does Bob’s Place need to be booked for the event, but other people are involved to put on the event.
The committee had to find a house band. They had to make audition flyers. They had to figure out their plan for food and drinks as well. The decorations had to be planned as well.
Loch said the process took about two months.
If students want to get involved for planning next year’s Cabaret for a Cause, they can talk to anyone who was on this year’s committee or Kevin White, who is the advisor for Cabaret.
