Hornback came for sports, discovered community

By Garrett Siefer

Alyssa Hornback is a sophomore at Bluffton university who plays volleyball for the Beavers, which at the moment are trying to win the HCAC conference title once again. She decided to go to Bluffton for the education, the campus and for volleyball.

Alyssa is from Fishers, Ind., where she also played volleyball. During her senior season she had an unfortunate injury to her shoulder. She had a lot of schools looking at her and recruiting her to play volleyball. After the injury, there was only one school who still wanted to take the chance on her. It was Bluffton, and it was important for her to play volleyball at the college level. She has returned to the court after rehabbing and is now ready to help the Beavers win another title.

Besides volleyball, Hornback was attracted to the History and English departments. She wants to be a history teacher specifically to high schoolers. Her goals for five years from now are pretty specific.

“I want to be a history teacher,to be married, to be a volleyball coach and to have a dog,” she said.

In Hornback’s free time she likes to hang out with her friends and boyfriend, Jared Sleutz. She said volleyball takes up most of her free time, but loves it too dearly to give it up.

“I put in the hard work so I can go out and fight hard on the court,” she said.

She also sings in the choir which takes up a lot of time with concerts and daily practice.

Hornback enjoys taking walks around the campus and the nature preserve.

“I came to campus for sports, but it is a major plus to have a beautiful campus,” she said.

She’s grateful for the campus and the opportunity a potentially devastating injury afforded her. Without the injury, Hornback said she wouldn’t have found Bluffton or the community she has discovered among her friends here.
