For senior early childhood and intervention specialist major Brittany Huff of Clayton, Ohio, her time as a student and as an athlete are coming to a close at Bluffton.
Throughout her time at Bluffton, Huff has been a student ambassador, is the current acting Bluffton SAAC vice president, a hall director, and a part of the both the women’s soccer and softball teams.
Huff was a team captain for the soccer team for both her junior and senior year. In her senior season, she had two goals and three assists. In her career, she is tied for sixth overall for goals scored with 15 and is tied for ninth overall with six assists. She has gotten the All-Academic HCAC award every year in both soccer and softball. She has also gotten the sportsmanship award, second team All-HCAC and honorable mention for soccer.
On Tuesday, April 17, Huff was named the Kathryn E. Little Award winner. This award is awarded to Bluffton’s top female athlete each year.
Huff’s accomplishments go beyond the soccer pitch. She’s also accomplishing things on the softball diamond.
This season, Huff has been outstanding at the plate. She has 47 hits on the year with 15 doubles and 7 home runs. She is currently third in the conference in home runs. She has racked up a total of 32 runs, 23 runs batted in and a batting average of .461. She is also leading the conference in batting average.
“I’ve been just trying to focus on making solid contact,” said Huff. “I am not focusing on hitting home runs, but hitting to give a chance for my team to get better. If someone is on base, my goal is to put the ball in play to give them a chance to either move on the bases or score.”
As of this year, Huff is pretty high up in most of the categories in the career record books. Her career slugg average is a .541 which is seventh all time for Bluffton. She is eleventh in most runs scored. She is tied for fifteenth for most doubles. She is fourth in home runs with 18 and eleventh in runs batted in with 72. Those are only the stats that she had through last season, which does not include the stats that she has already accumulated this season.
The softball team does not have set captains, but Huff has really led by example at the plate. With her hitting this season and in the previous season, she has really been someone the younger players can look up to. Players can look up to her skills for hitting. Even outside of sports, players can look up to Huff for her ability to be a positive role model both on and off the field.
“I would say just have confidence in yourself and never give up,” said Huff. “No matter what happens, when you have confidence in the box, you will succeed. Have as much confidence in yourself as your coaches and team does. It will do wonders.”
