Students interested in making some extra money or who have any money laying around might want to check out Bluffton University’s Investment Club.
In the past, the club only targeted business majors and did not advertise much. This year they are hanging up flyers and trying to email a wider variety of people.
Club members manage a portfolio of real stocks, and their meetings consist of evaluating their stocks, deciding whether they want to sell or buy other stocks.
Kirk Kauder, the club’s president, said he wants it to grow to include students from multiple majors rather than just business.
“[Leaders in the past] used to send emails to business majors and no one else, and I think it is important for anyone because if you have the money, investing it is always a good option,” he said.
The group also discusses what their profits and losses for the month. Finally, they play a virtual stock market game to help people get started and learn how the market works.
“It is a very good club to get practice with the fake money and kind of see how things go and if you do well and know why you did well then you could possibly do it with your real money so I think it’s a good club for anybody but most of the time is business majors who come,” said Krauder.
The club, which Krauder says goes back at least 30 years, ended last year with two members at their last meeting while having 14 at the first meeting this year.
In the club’s first meeting of the 2019-20 year, they elected a new vice president who was Igor Malaquias, he will be joining Secretary Michelle Swartley and Treasurer Riley Larcum.
“It will be from 6-7 so people that do have sports can make it, and if people have night classes they can still come for a little bit,” said Kauder.
The next Investment Club meeting will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Kreider Room.
