The real world is scary. Interviews, a real job, bills- they can be daunting as students approach graduation. This is why Bluffton’s Center for Career and Vocation Center offers many opportunities for students to rehearse and prepare.
On Tuesday, March 22 from 6 to 8 p.m in Marbeck’s Kiva and Gallery Lounge, the Center for Career and Vocation Center is holding a Mock Interview Night event. Britnie Loch from the CCVC has organized the upcoming opportunity.
“Mock interviews give students the opportunity to think through all the aspects of interviewing – what to wear, what to bring, how to prep,” said Loch. “Practice helps ease the interview-jitters because students have been able to develop their skills and interviewing confidence.”
As HR professionals can’t risk answering “how can I improve my interviewing?” in a real setting, the mock interviews are an opportunity to receive this kind of helpful feedback to help prepare for future interviews. The mock interviewers are happy to offer suggestions on interviewing and resumes.
“We try to pair students with at least one or two interviewers from their field,” Loch said. “By doing this, students get to experience some of the questions they will be asked specific to that field. Students can also ask questions of the interviewer specific to job searching, networking, and interviewing in their field.”
This annual event is held typically once a year during the spring semester. This year’s event, though, will have an additional component that has not been offered other years- networking. There will be a space for interviewing and a space for networking.
“In the networking space, students will have the opportunity to rub elbows with professionals over refreshments in a setting less formal than an interview,” Said Loch. “You’d be surprised that it actually takes practice to comfortably carry on a professional and productive conversation with someone while standing, eating and drinking.”
In the past, students have developed professional relationships through this event, and some encounters have even led to job offers. This is a great opportunity for students to meet and connect with professionals in their field.
Although this event is highly encouraged for juniors and seniors, Loch points out that the more practice the better. It’s never too early to start preparing and practicing interviewing skills.
“Just like with any other skill, people build their interviewing skills with practice so this event is designed as a safe and low-risk opportunity for students to stretch their interviewing muscles,” said Loch.
