Rom-com recommendation roundup

Valentine’s Day is this Thursday, Feb. 14. With the year’s most romantic holiday just around the corner, there is one pastime those with or without a romantic partner can enjoy一the romantic comedy. Of course, not every romantic comedy is created equal. As such, which rom-coms are considered the best by members of the Bluffton University community?

“My favorite romantic comedy is ‘Hope Floats,’” said Director of Academic Development Services Jacqui Slinger. “I like the two lead actors, who are Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick, Jr. I also think rom-coms should have, included in them, multigenerational families from which they can draw good characters from.”

Emma Cobb, a junior majoring in dietetics and music, also gave her endorsement to a Sandra Bullock rom-com一“The Proposal.”

“I think it’s funny just how Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds interact in the film,” said Cobb. “It’s not a high school romance so it’s, like, a little bit more relatable.”

Rowena Zuercher, a junior social work and Spanish major, said her favorite romantic comedy is “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

“I love Steve Carrel, and I think it’s just a really funny storyline,” said Zuercher.

Alicia Loch, a senior sociology and biology double major, named “27 Dresses” as her favorite romantic comedy because of the performance of lead actress Katherine Heigl and the designs of the eponymous dresses.

“To me, it’s not like, a cliché, chick flick rom-com,” said Loch. “I just think it’s really funny.”

Berlin Fuqua, a sophomore art major, said the film “13 Going On 30” is the best romantic comedy because of how it tackles themes of growing up.

“I think it’s a really intriguing storyline about what it means to actually grow up, and the complexities of adulthood,” said Fuqua. “Plus, Mark Ruffalo is insanely hot.”

Emily Rush, a senior English education major, named the 1940 film “The Philadelphia Story” as her favorite romantic comedy due to the cast and writing of the film.

“It has Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart,” said Rush. “It has a really good script, just a lot of fun dialogue.”

Whether you’re wondering what to watch with your significant other or looking for a good way to pass Valentine’s Day alone, consider this list as inspiration and watch a rom-com.
