Junior criminal justice and social work major Sammi Urban got stuck in the Ramseyer elevator for 45 minutes two weeks ago.
“I had just ordered pizza, went down to go pick it up, opened the elevator door, pressed three because I live on the third floor, started to go up and then it just stopped,” said Urban.
Urban had been stuck between the first and second floor of Ramseyer Hall. At first Urban thought the elevator was stopping at the second floor. After a minute went by she came to the realization that it was much more than that.
When she first realized that she was stuck she called her roommate. They said they had a difficult time reaching people to
let them know about the situation until they finally got a hold of Ramseyer’s Hall Director, Zachary Nobis.
“We couldn’t physically do much to help her in the moment, but we stood outside the elevator door and talked to her in an attempt to keep her calm,” said Nobis. “She had a pizza in there with her so I bet that helped.”
For those 45 minutes Urban was stuck inside the elevator, she said that she sat on her phone and ate the pizza until the Bluffton Fire Department showed up to rescue her.
“There were so many people when they finally opened the door for me,” said Urban.
