Snow blanketed the ground in Bluffton on Feb. 3. With many professors canceling classes the next day, some students took the opportunity to use their newly found free time to play in the snow.
“I think [the snow] looks really pretty,” said Jenía Freewalt, a sophomore art education major. “I usually hate the cold, but I really like snow. Just as long as everyone is being safe on the roads, I really enjoy the snow and looking outside.”
Members of the track team took part in a snowball fight outside of Bren-Dell Hall. Some took advantage of the campus’ many hills by going sledding, while others resorted to making snow angels and other drawings on the ground.
“I just decided to go play in it [the snow],” said Freewalt. “We got a group together of the track team, mostly, and we played in the snow.”
Some students were creative in how they played in the snow. Sophomore elementary education and intervention specialist major Miranda Billman used a balance board to go down the hill by Bren-Dell.
“We didn’t know where the sled was, so we used that,” said Billman.
The snow did cause some difficulties for students trying to get around campus, however. Many of the sidewalks were not cleared and cars remained stuck, covered in snow until Feb. 4. Kelly Bilen, a sophomore studio art major, said she noticed how the art building is always the last to be cleared of snow.
“Over by the art building, I had to shovel outside of the door because the door would not close all the way,” said Bilen. “I even put a note on the door to make sure the door would close all the way. It’s so annoying when you are trying to get to class and the snow’s not cleared yet.
Bilen compared the snowfall to a storm from 2021, which happened around the same time as this one.
“It’s very crazy,” said Bilen. “About a year ago, we had a snowstorm, but it didn’t happen over two days, it happened over one day, and they cleared it up pretty well. But this time, there was so much snow and then it snowed again.”
