On April 9 and 12, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was made available for students and staff on Bluffton University’s campus at Founders Hall. The appointment process was made simple for ease of access, and they even welcomed walk-in appointments as an encouragement for people to receive their vaccines. The vaccines were provided by the State of Ohio in partnership with Blanchard Valley Hospital. Many nursing students were set up to assist in administering the vaccines. As announced on April 13 through an email by Karen Bontrager and the COVID-19 steering committee, the CDC and FDA has recommended a pause in the administration of Johnson & Johnson vaccine as a precaution to the very rare instance of blood clots.
The media statement released by the CDC stated, “People who have received the J&J vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider.”
