October is here and so is one of the most festive and celebrated holidays of the year!
HALLOWEEN!!!!
Welcome to The Spooky Season!
The Spooky Season will replace Around the Horn for the rest of October to bring you spooktacular surprises and information on all spooky activities going on around campus.
Without further ado, let’s jump into this week’s THE SPOOKY SEASON.
Best Door Decorations of the Week
Every week, the best door decoration will be shouted out and given the prize of bragging rights.
This week’s door was decorated by Claire Myree, sophomore English and communication double major, and Kylie Brock, sophomore dietetics major.
“Our favorite part of the door is the witch thing, because it’s funny,” said Myree.
You may wonder why some people decorate their doors. Some for the pure enjoyment of the holiday, but others, others do it for the competition.
“We decorated the door in an attempt to show all of [Hirschy] Annex that we are the queens of all things fall and all things spooky” said Myree.
These spooky queens have earned their bragging rights on the spookiest door of the week!
Pumpkin Carving
Who said that you can’t carve pumpkins in college?
Making a face or cool artwork out of something you just stabbed and scooped the guts out of may sound like a terrifying horror scene. However, with the tradition of Halloween comes pumpkin carving.
The one and only time your mother will let you play with something messy at the dinner table is with pumpkin carving.
A very opinionated side note: Gingerbread houses are nowhere near as fun as hollowing out a pumpkin!
An equally opinionated side note: Anything pumpkin is more delicious than gingerbread.
Costume Ideas
Here is my two costume suggestions that would be cute for a couple and an individual.
For couples: Moth and Lamp. Moth loves Lamp.
For individual: This costume may take some extra work. When Toys R’ Us went out of business, there was a huge liquidation sale where every part of the store was for sale. I bought a shopping cart and have been jumbling around a couple of ideas for quite a bit. You could use the shopping cart to pretend like you’re grocery shopping on trick-or-treat.
For couples: OR if you bought two shopping carts, you could dress in medieval clothing, get pool noodles, have people push you while in the cart, and pretend to joust!
Spooky Stories
Every week, there will be at least one very short spooky happening, tale, or place that is told about in this section of the column.
I will start off this section with some things that have happened to me in my room.
Most times around 2:30 a.m., I wake up to hear people talking in the middle of the night. I always assume it’s my neighbors just staying up and talking. Upon closer listening, the talking seems to resemble more of whispers.
I get up from my bed, and notice the whispers seem to be coming from the closet. I know that my neighbors TV is on the other side of my closet, so I convince myself that it’s just the TV.
Except when my neighbors go home for fall break.
