Dining on local comfort food

For some people Valentine’s Day is a season of joy and love. A way to show your significant other how much they mean to you through romantic gestures you otherwise wouldn’t bother with. For others, this Hallmark holiday is nothing more than a reminder of their singleness. The sight of couple’s romantic dinner dates or Snapchat stories of gifts people received from their “other half” are enough to make them choke on the so called “love in the air.”

Instead of bemoaning your singleness, or better yet drowning it in a tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream or a roll of cookie dough during the Valentine’s season, students recommend venturing out and trying comfort foods from local restaurants.

Twisted Whisk

For all coffee lovers and caffeine addicts, Twisted Whisk offers multiple Valentine’s Day flavors as a part of their February specials.

Cozy up at a corner table with a cup of Cupid’s Hot Chocolate, a mixture of strawberry, vanilla and white chocolate. Or take a cold cup of Dozen Roses, a strawberry flavored coffee with chocolate cold foam, to go. Other Valentine’s beverages include Sweetheart, a mix of chocolate, white chocolate and raspberry, and Love Bug, flavored with brown sugar, cinnamon and toasted marshmallow. Both can be served hot or cold.

Prices may vary by flavor.

Greenhorn

If you are looking for healthy options, senior social work major Genoa Arling and junior Bible major Caitlin Bennett both recommend dishes from Greenhorn.

Arling recommends the Curried Chicken Salad Wrap, a combination of house-made seitan, curry, almonds, cranberries, greens, tomato, cucumber, bell peppers, carrots and lemonette. Priced at $9.

Bennett’s go to dish is falafel, served with hummus, tabbouleh, pickles, tahini sauce and pita. Priced at $11.

Kira’s Flipside Grill

Several students recommend stopping by Kira’s Flipside Grill for some classic comfort foods.

The well-known Chicken Chunk bowl can be a great way to fill yourself up with six house breaded chicken chunks and hand cut fries layered with bacon, cheddar and mozzarella cheese and your choice of sauce. Priced at $11.

Pizza from Kira’s is also an option. You can order the classic Chicago style crust for $13 or a lighter cauliflower crust for $10. Each can be topped with a variety of toppings including beef, sausage, ham, pepperoni, mushroom, chicken, black and green olives, onion, green, red and banana peppers, jalapeno, tomato, pepperoncini, pineapple, basil, roasted garlic or spinach.

Lulu’s

The restaurant favored for their delectable breakfast options is on the radar for Bluffton University students this season.

Junior art education major Jenia Freewalt recommends the Lulu Classic: a combination of two pancakes, two slices of thick cut bacon and two eggs any style. Priced at $7.29.

The strawberry waffle is another option for breakfast comfort foods. A large Belgian waffle topped with fresh-cut strawberries, topped with fresh whipped cream and powdered sugar. Priced at $6.99.
