The Spooky Season round 2

Written by Colten McCabe

Closer and closer does the clock count down to the spookiest time of the year.

More Halloween stuff you say?

OF COURSE!

Best door decorations of the week

For this door decoration of the week, we have both the door and some suggestions on future door decorating events.

Starting with the door of the week, we have fellow Witmarsum staff convergent journalist and photographer Alexus Sponseller.

“I chose to decorate my door because everyone else in my hall did,” said Sponseller. “I wanted to be a cool kid, too. I think my favorite part of the door is the spider because it glows in the dark!”

An ominous glowing spider that greets students as they walk through the halls.

Spooky and creative.

Taylor Cook, third year TESOL major with a minors in English and Spanish, had a few suggestions on door decorating.

“I really wish we did campus-wide trick or treating,” said Cook. “I would get into door decorating more because I’d want my door to look really cool if we did trick or treating. And I wish we did for Halloween what we do for Christmas [door decorating wise] because it’s a competition that you can win prizes with. I think that would be fun if we did the same for Halloween.”

These seem like some fine suggestions…so let’s make it happen Bluffton!

Pumpkin carving

Maybe carving pumpkins seems like a once a year thing. For me however, I could carve and paint pumpkins every week.

So for this week, fellow Witmarsum convergent journalist Trent Mast, first-year soccer player Hunter Fleck, and the host of all things spooky (me), took to dicing up some of October’s very own mascot.

Apparently, the insides of a pumpkin really scare Trent and I, while Hunter stares very creepily at Trent.

Costume ideas

Singles costume ideas:

A can of Fresh Pressed Apple Scented Febreze with a belt full of smaller Fresh Pressed Apple Scented Febreeze.

Couples’ costume ideas:

Puzzle Pieces. Kind of like a ‘You complete me’ type deal.

If one of you is lazier than the other, then whoever is the laziest can dress up in sports attire while the other dresses up as a box fan and write “Number One” on the fan. (I’m your number one fan. I thought it was at least entertaining).

Family costume ideas:

Woah family costume ideas? Have you lost your mind?

Yes I have lost my mind. I am a college student.

So a mom dresses as a pumpkin and her kids are all the seeds (A stretch yes, but attainable).

Spooky stories

Today was my brother’s birthday. We usually visit him many times throughout the week, but we don’t bring quite the amount of gifts as we did today. I fell asleep in the car as I always do. The same highway and buildings get boring the more you look at them.

In my dream, there was a skeleton man with a dark hood, standing at the edge of darkness. He didn’t scare me as much as the some of the boy’s rooms I walked past in the hospital. I walked over to him and he turned on some swing music, and for awhile, we just danced. I liked dancing with him because he was nice to me. I forgot about many of the things that happened to me throughout the past month.

“James,” my mother said from the driver’s seat.

I awoke to see the ginormous hospital, just as creepy and alone as we had left it before.

We were greeted at the door by a woman who was very out of breath. She began to tell my mother that my brother had fallen asleep, and that they were having troubles trying to wake him up. My mother cried as my father held her.

I didn’t cry once that day, because I knew that my brother was dancing with the nice skeleton man.

In closing

As Halloween slowly creeps its way back into our lives, we must appreciate all of the moments and memories that we make with our friends and family.

Hoping your Halloween activities continue to be fun filled and full of amazing memories!
