Around the Horn: April showers

Written by Colten McCabe

I was getting scared for a second, because I thought there may never be another warm day again.

I heard, “Oh, it’s gonna rain on Easter, it always does,” and “Oh Colten, you’re too old to get an Easter basket,” and all of the other horrible lies people tell you to ruin your day.

My dad got me an Easter basket that was a sock monkey, so I wanted to give a special shout-out to everyone who says getting older means less Easter funmy one pound chocolate bunny says otherwise.

That being said, I ate way too much candy and totally procrastinated on all of my studies. (When someone places an entire ham in front of you, I don’t think you would want to write papers either).

But this isn’t a paper. OH NO! This is AROUND THE HORN!

It’s the final edition of the semester too, so buckle up–or unbuckle if you ate too much food as well–and enjoy this late April edition of AROUND THE HORN!

Final Exams

During finals week, I usually eat a bunch of food, sleep sporadically, occasionally try meditation apps on my phone–until I realize phones can’t meditate, so why should I?–and clean. (If I can’t get my life together, I can at least douse the room in cinnamon apple Febreeze.)

Now, I know what you’re thinking: Why does Colten talk to himself so much?

The answer to that question is like my front row parking spot when I leave to go to McDonald’s and come back–lost without a trace.

I can, however, answer the question: What should I do during finals week?

Keep cool, study in chunks, drink lots of water, eat some food. Generally just take care of yourself.

Also, try not to talk to yourself too much. (Unless it works, then keep on talking.)

You’ll do great!

LitFest

Short for Literature Festival, LitFest is happening at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 26, in Bob’s Place.

There will be games, prizes, awkward English people (not the British), students reading their writings, balloons, arts and lecture credit and so much more!

The event is to celebrate the Bridge Journal as well as the Shalith.

Me and my homie g, Alex Rose, will be emceeing the event, so make sure to show up for a super awesome fun time.

Apologies

I was playing tennis ball golf, and I killed a flower outside of the Sauder Visual Arts Center.

I would like to take this time to apologize to all of the flowers on campus who have been smashed, squashed, killed, murdered, ripped to shreds and/or demoralized due to college students playing tennis ball golf.

I send my further condolences to Buildings and Grounds.

Course evaluations

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to give your teacher a grade?

Welcome to end-of-semester course evaluations!

Make sure to fill them out so your professors know how they’re doing.

Senior Week

From April 27 to May 2, there are some super cool events to help the seniors celebrate their final days at Bluffton and reflect on the good times spent.

Here is a quick list the Senior Week events:

April 27: Moyer Center Kickoff! At the Bluffton University nature preserve, the Moyer Center will open, allowing students to use the resources for awesome endeavors like canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding.

April 28: Free bowling from 9 to 11 p.m. at Southgate Lanes!

April 30: Party on the Neufeld Lawn! From 5 to 8 p.m., there will be axe throwing, giant games and food trucks.

May 2: Trip to Scene 75! Seniors will have the opportunity to play games, ride go-karts or play laser tag. The first 50 seniors to sign up will have $20 to spend, and the first 35 seniors to sign up will be able to take the bus, which will leave Bluffton at 4:30 p.m. and return at 9:30 p.m.

Thank you seniors for being super cool as we all will miss you lots.

Spring Fling Concert

On April 28 at 2:30 pm in Yoder Recital, the Bluffton University Camerata Singers, Chorale, Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble will be playing some super cool music.

The event is free, and everyone involved works very hard. Make sure to show them some support!

Guys and Dolls

On May 3 to 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Founders Hall, go see members of our campus community perform the insanely catchy tunes from Guys and Dolls!

I’ve been listening to Trent Mast, fellow Wit staffer and Guys and Dolls performer, sing the songs, and the beautiful notes have convinced me to go see the show.

This production is sure to excite, so make sure to catch this May Day Musical!

Advice before you go

Catch on fire with enthusiasm, and people will come for miles to watch you burn.

Be incendiary, you beautiful burning fires.

The crazy thing about a fire is that it catches on, encasing more and more things in flames.

While some may say “a good attitude is contagious” and “shine bright,” I argue that enthusiasm is flammable.

This grabs the best of both sayings, incorporating attitude and ability to shine.

I know it’s an odd concept, but just remember that burning doesn’t always have to result in devastation.

In closing

Thank you for an amazing year.

So many dreams came true, and I learned an insane amount of things from both my classes and the people around me.

I wish every senior the best of luck in their future endeavors. I wish the Marbeck staff a much needed break from cooking a bunch of food every day. I wish every student a breath of fresh air and a summer of relief to catch their stamina, and I wish every professor a summer filled with no more grading and no more putting up with stressed-out college students.

We made it another academic year around the horn.

I am so proud of everyone involved with The Witmarsum, and I am so amazed to see how much progress we’ve made in just a year.

Continue working and continue to be your amazing selves.

From one beaver to another, I hope to see you: AROUND THE HORN!
