Cabaret for a Cause

Written by Payton Stephens

Cabaret for a Cause took place this past Saturday, March 27. Students were able to audition early in the semester to pre-record themselves singing a cover or original song. On Saturday, The Commons was decorated and students and faculty arrived in formal attire to watch and listen to the students’ recordings and enjoy food prepared by BUNA members. The entrance fee to the cabaret was $5, which was donated to this year’s cause of choice.

This year’s Cabaret for a Cause supported The Trevor Project. The Trevor Project is an American non-profit organization made to help suicidal LGBTQ+ youth. Its organization runs a national, toll free 24-hour suicide hotline. Members of the LGBTQ+ community are encouraged to call the hotline in times of need and talk to the qualified counselors. Counselors can be reached by calling or texting 1-(866)-488-7386.

The Trevor Project was founded in 1988 by the creators of the Academy-Award winning short film TREVOR—Peggy Rajski, Randy Stone, and Celeste Lecesne—and is now considered the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ individuals under the age of 25.

If you are interested in volunteering, apply today at www.thetrevorproject.org. If accepted, you will be trained to handle situations that may occur from possible callers/texters. Before being accepted, there will be a brief interview with a recruiter as well as a background check to verify qualifications.
