Kauffman: Community makes Commons job enjoyable

Whether it be eating, studying or hanging out with friends, students spend a lot of time in The Commons and Bob’s Place in Marbeck Center. However, it can be easy to forget about the people who make your everyday meals happen.

Freshman Justin Kauffman serves lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at The Commons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Although he says serving food can get pretty monotonous, he enjoys the company of working with friends.

“I like the people I work with,” he said.“They make the job more enjoyable and help time go by faster.”

One may think that serving food is an easy and repetitive job, but that’s not always the case according to Kauffman.

“You want to make everyone happy,” he said.“You’re only supposed to give one serving to each person, but of course they want more. It’s hard not to throw an extra scoop of potatoes on their plate.”

The busiest time, or the most difficult part of Kauffman’s job, he said, is the lunch rush around noon.

Despite being unable to please everyone and the sudden rush of hungry students to Marbeck’s Commons for lunch, Kauffman said he enjoys his job and would recommend it to any first-year student looking for easy on-campus work.
