Lip Sync Battle 2023

The annual Lip Sync Battle took place Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in Yoder Recital Hall. Every year around this time students gather to see contestants dance and lip sync to different songs, whether that be a soloist or group act.

This year’s soloist acts were: Payton Stephens, singing a mashup song; J-Denny lip syncing “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, Kerryon Boykin, performing Meek Mill’s “Dreams & Nightmares;” Logan Knous with Pitbull’s “I Like It;” Macey Thomas, Gretchen Wilson’s “Redneck Woman;” and Zach Boch with Victoria Justice’s “Freak the Freak Out.”

The two group performances were: Marissa Blake, Rilynn Kaufmann and Evie Masters performing “Crusin’ for a Bruisin’” from Teen Beach Movie and Thomas, Boykin and Emma Mueller lip syncing Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar’s “Bad Blood.”

“I was nervous at first because there were a bunch of people and I’m not the best dancer but then I felt I just nailed it,” said sophomore nursing major Knous.

This battle becomes a different environment from other campus events because it offers a friendly competition to win. Students get excited for events as such to cheer on their peers. There is always a crowd at this annual event.

“I thought it went great because the crowd was laughing,” said Knous. “I had to be able to work the crowd very well.”

When students enter this competition this year there is a chance to win Visa gift cards. This offers a chance for students to battle out and compete for a prize. The soloist winner announced was J-Denny, later corrected as Boch, and the group winners were Thomas, Mueller and Boykin.

“We had some really great acts this year, this was the first year the beaver performed and then won,” said senior Elizabeth Rockwell. “It was funny to see the beaver up there lip syncing rather than at the games just interacting with people.”
