Review: Yellowstone starts slow but gets you hooked

By Tate Smith

Most of the campus community watches shows on streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and many more. One recent show that has come out on Peacock is definitely worth a watch: Yellowstone. Which has a great plot throughout the now four seasons that are out.

Yellowstone, which has a great plot throughout the four seasons, takes place in the west in Yellowstone, Montana. The show introduces the Dutton family who owns the biggest ranch in all of Montana called the “Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.” According to critic Amanda Whiting, this is the oldest told story about the American west.

The family consists of the dad John, played by Kevin Costner, and daughter Beth and sons Lee, Jamie and Casey. They live on a massive ranch that borders a fictional Broken Rock Indian Reservation whose residents are fighting to get their land back that the Dutton ancestors took from them many years ago. Everyone seems to want a piece of the Dutton.

This series has moments toward the beginning that are definitely boring, but then out of no where something happens bringing you right into the action. Once you get hooked on this show it keeps you for the rest of the four seasons. The amount of action, betrayal, love and drama this show brings is unmatched by most of the shows I have watched.

According to Forbes, Yellowstone has better ratings than the popular show Game of Thrones season 6 finale in 2016. Yellowstone had 9.3 million views the day of the finale premiere compared to 8.3 million Game of Thrones finale 2016.

The ratings reflect how good this series is. Yellowstone really knows how to keep an audience. The surprises and the true grit of the characters in the series kept me watching.

If a series is so good that is causes me to stay up way later than normal to watch it, then it’s a good series. I know a few other people who were watching it every week it came out, and others who binge watched it in only a few days. Once the show has you it has you hooked, you’ll watch it all the way through.

Rotten Tomatoes, a critic site that judges shows and movies, rated Yellowstone by season, and all but the first season rated over 88%,  with the third season getting a 100% rating on the scale.

Even for me I am not great a finishing series, but this on any free moment I had I watched as much Yellowstone as I could.

This review was only on Yellowstone, but I feel like it’s an injustice to not mention the prequel of Yellowstone, which is 1883. 1883 gives background on how the Dutton ancestors ended up in Yellowstone, Montana, telling the story of their journey from Texas and why they claimed the land.

I highly suggest watching this series for at least the first season. If you don’t like it after that, I understand, but I am going to guess you will be hooked!
