Summer plans

The last day of the semester is approaching us. After finals, the next thing on your mind might be graduation, the musical, May Day, your last sports event or what you are going to be doing this summer.

For some of you, summer may involve relaxing on a beach, playing video games, finding a job, staying on campus, working or doing a random mixture of things. Whether you’re building sandcastles on the beach or working a job, we are all going to be doing something.

Junior Emily Griffioen, a graphic design major and Iowa native, will be working on campus this summer in the public relations house. She will also be working at the Food Store in town.

“I won’t be taking any classes, but I will be working on my ongoing undergraduate thesis project for my graphic design major,” said Griffioen. “I’m also doing more fun stuff, like going to weddings, a family reunion and what I’m calling a ‘rollercoaster tour,’ which is going to four or five different amusement parks here in Ohio.”

“Hopefully this summer I’ll rent an apartment in town with Chanhee Hwang, Allyson Fuqua and Miriam Fike,” said Griffioen. “We’re still tying up loose ends, though.”

Besides working, Griffioen said she tries to do other things.

“Usually over the summer, besides work, I try to go to a few really cheap concerts or festivals,” said Griffioen. “I also hang out with friends in the area a lot and try to get involved with the church, if possible.”

This summer, freshman nursing major Amani Seaburn plans to stay in Bluffton for a month. She currently works at the Mennonite Memorial Home as a state tested nurse assistant or STNA.

This summer, Seaburn will transition from her STNA job to working as an intern at Camp McPherson, a church camp. It will be a new summer experience for her.

“For the past two summers, I’ve worked two different consistent jobs,” said Seaburn. “This summer I’ll be transitioning from a job I’ve had since October to a summer camp job.”

Before college, her summers were pretty similar.

“For the past couple of summers I have worked to save up money for my future endeavors; things like a car, car insurance, phone bill, tuition, etc.,” said Seaburn.

The last day of exams will be Thursday, May 3. Non-graduating students have to be out of their dorms 24 hours after their last exam. If they need to stay longer, they can fill out an extended stay form.

The May Day Musical, “Title of Show” will debut at Friday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m., and graduation is Sunday, May 6.

Students will have about four months until the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. Move-in day for new and transfer students is on Aug. 24. Returning students can move-in on Aug. 26.
