Week-long celebration says farewell to class of 2018

It’s time for a celebration of accomplishments, for all the hard work and dedication. It’s time for the last hurrah full of laughter and cherished memories.

For the first time Bluffton University will host a week of activities and events dedicated to making the graduating class’ last few days as a student memorable.

“We wanted a way to send off the seniors and give them a little something to remember their last year of college,” said Eli Herman, a graduate assistant for Residence Life.

Herman credits Dean of Students Julie DeGraw for the idea, stating last year’s senior bowling event was a trial run to see if students would be interested.

Senior dietetics major Laura Galley is looking forward to the events.

“I was excited last year when they hosted the bowling event for seniors,” said Galley. “But when it was announced there would be a full week of events dedicated to seniors I was thrilled.”

The week will include five days of activities, starting with a Toledo Mud Hens game April 28. Festivities will continue Sunday and on into finals week, comprising of a variety of other activities such as karaoke, a food truck, bowling and more.

Marbeck Center Board, Student Senate and the Office for Student Involvement are sponsoring the week.

Through the hectic season of final papers, exams, job applications and interviews, many seniors are looking forward to the new week devoted solely to the celebration of their time here and the big step that comes after May 6.

Senior business administration major Mary Jo Bash said this senior week will bring nostalgia but provide some great memories to her final chapter here at Bluffton.

“I am looking forward to singing ‘High School Musical’ one last time with my roommate at karaoke in Bob’s [Place],” said senior business administration major Mary Jo Bash. “I’ve sang a throwback with a group of volleyball girls almost every year MCB has hosted karaoke night. So being able to sing one more time will be a great memory for my final week at Bluffton.”

Jared Sleutz, a senior business administration major, expressed his excitement for simply spending time with his friends.

“I look forward to spending time with my fellow seniors and celebrating together our accomplished goal of graduating,” said Sleutz.

Herman is excited for what the seniors will think about the eventful week.

“We are excited for the senior week, but we are also excited for the senior’s feedback,” said Herman. “The hope is to make this an every year tradition.”
