Wit staff profile: Colton Steiner

Want to know what it is like to work for The Witmarsum? How about the range of jobs one might be able to do? This Witmarsum profile takes a look at senior Colton Steiner.

Steiner is a double major in broadcasting and journalism and sports information from Kidron, Ohio. He likes to watch YouTube videos, fishing and shooting hoops during his free time. Steiner started working for the Witmarsum his junior year.

“My freshman year, The Wit (then known as The Bluffton Connection) wasn’t really a thing,” said Steiner. “It was existent, but I didn’t know anything about it. My sophomore year when Marathana Prothro arrived, she got to work rebuilding the brand of The Wit.”

Steiner said even though he did not start working for the Wit until his junior year, he was contributing to it his sophomore year.

“When I first started working for The Witmarsum my junior year, I originally took over the Twitter account and managed that side of social media,” said Steiner. “At the time, we didn’t have a person in charge of video, so I took that up to fill part of my hours for the job. I started to enjoy the video making part a lot more than just the social media side, so I have now accepted to focus primarily on video work for The Wit–and write an opinion article from time-to-time.”

Steiner said his favorite part about the Wit is how official and professional it is.

“I have been able to see the growth of the news outlet and see how far we’ve come in just the three years of rebooting The Witmarsum,” said Steiner. “I’m able to learn more about what I want to do while also creating, what I think, is professional content. I’ve also been able to make some great friendships with this job.”

Working for The Wit is a way for communication and convergent media students to gain real life experience in there field of study.

“The Wit has been helping me incredibly as I prepare for my future in various communications fields, said Steiner. “Just in the last couple years, I have increased many skills in writing, social media and especially in video.”

Steiner also said the hands-on experience has helped him because he is learning as he is working on a project.

“This is basically what video work has been,” said Steiner. “I’ve only had one class about video in my life, but other than that, I have had to teach myself practically everything that I’ve learned. I don’t know if that would’ve been possible if I wasn’t working with The Wit.”

Latey, Steiner has been working on his video series for The Wit, “Coffee with Coaches.”

Steiner does have another job on campus. It is in the same department as his sports information major.

“I do go to almost every sporting event on campus since I do enjoy sports a lot,” said Steiner, “and it is part of my job with the sports information department.”
