10 College life hacks

Written by Danielle Easterday

College is a time for students to expand their knowledge, to learn how to manage their time and grow into the adults they will become. However, college can become increasingly difficult for students living in residence halls if they don’t have enough space for their clothes or if they don’t have certain items most homes have. These life hacks may just be the thing that makes your life a little easier.

  1. Use a hair straightener to iron your clothes

Some students are accustomed to having their clothes ironed out at home for any important events they may have. However, a hair straightener is a perfect fix for wrinkled clothes, especially if you don’t own an iron.

  1. Take a picture of your schedule and set it as your lock screen

For the students who are a little forgetful, a great idea to remember your schedule at the beginning of the semester is to take a picture of your schedule and set it as your lock screen. This also works if you set it as your home screen. It allows you to have easy access to check your schedule and to not let anyone know you forgot it.

  1. Use empty toilet paper rolls for organization

Maintaining good organization for classes is hard enough already and maintaining an organized desk may seem impossible. A little tip for this is to take empty toilet paper rolls and use them as pencil holders, earbud holders and USB holders.

  1. Use a mug to place an extra bowl in the microwave for reheating food

This is an excellent idea for those who like to reheat multiple bowls of food at once. Place one bowl on one side of the microwave and place the mug beside it. You can then place the other bowl of food on top of the mug, allowing both bowls of food to cook at once.

  1. Save closet space with double clothes hangers with soda tabs or paper clips

Some students love clothes and bring a lot of clothes with them. If you find yourself running out of closet space, you can always use a soda tab or a paper clip to link two clothes hangers together, gaining you more space inside the closet.

  1. Keep your room smelling nice with dryer sheets

A great way to make sure your room smells nice is to place dryer sheets in front of a fan or an AC unit in your room. The scent of the dryer sheet permeates the air, making your room smell like the scent of your dryer sheet.

  1. Use command hooks to hang your coats up

Coats can take up a lot of closet space so instead of taking up the closet space, you can use command hooks to do the job. If you use the bigger command hooks, you can place them on your closet door or the wall, keeping the coats off the floor and out of the closet.

Cleaning your dishes can be a chore. An easy fix is to use a tortilla as a plate or a bowl for your food instead. Then, there won’t be any dishes or plates left to clean.

  1. Hang a damp towel in front of the window to cool down your room

Sometimes your dorm room can get a little stuffy. A quick solution is to hang a damp towel in front of an open window to cool the room down.

  1. Place your laptop on top of an egg carton or a drink carrier to prevent it from overheating

Your laptop is your best friend in college. You use it for assignments, papers, videos, notes, etc. One small inconvenience is when it starts to overheat on your lap. This can be fixed by placing your laptop on top of an empty egg carton or a drink carrier you get from a fast food restaurant.
