Around the Horn: Finals Week

Written by Colten McCabe

It seems like yesterday I was moving my air conditioner into my room, wiping drops of sweat from my forehead, dreading preseason soccer workouts.

How’s it going?

Have the final parts of your semester come tumbling down harder than a cold Bluffton snow?

No worries! Winter break is coming up, and maybe through some puns and useful information, I can take your mind off of some stress.

So let’s jump right into it!

Downtown lights

Oh my goodness is downtown Bluffton gorgeous!

If you have not made it off campus in a little while, take a break and go see the lights.

The entire front yard of the Bluffton Presbyterian Church is decked out in lights and decorations, illuminating the sky with Christmas’s most festive colors.

Before you leave for break, make sure to check out the beautiful lights in the Village of Bluffton.

Weather

Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is it a frozen tundra or just dismal cloudy weather? What about fifty degrees and a little sunny? What about so icy that you fall two or three times walking to class?

“Whether” it’s so cold that your tears freeze, or so rainy your shoes squeak, just make sure to cover up and be safe walking around campus.

Wherever I look, “icy” crazy weather! The weather does whatever it wants, and it’s hard to get a “rain” on the handles, when things are “snowballing” out of control. Honestly, with the weather being so unstable, I have “snow” idea if I can even make it home safely!

Good golly, I really “mist” making puns.

Finals Breakfast

At 10 p.m. in Marbeck, there is the annual FINALS BREAKFAST!

Full of games, caroling and food, the event helps to relieve the stress of finals week.

Make sure to stop by for delicious food and a great time.

Finals

Everything will be okay.

Look up your exam schedule, write it out and figure out which days to work on final projects or to study for exams.

Planning is a great way to work out stress, as it helps you plan for what comes next.

I know it is hard to plan what goes on in college, especially when your friends invite you to McDonald’s, and you just cannot resist the taste of a juicy McDouble and an apple pie.

Nevertheless, make sure you are doing okay. It is easy to be hard on yourself and get behind because of stress.

On behalf of…well…Colten, I wish you the best of luck on your final projects and exams!

Also, if you have a mountain of homework and studying to do, believe in yourself and “climate” (one last weather pun─I wasn’t done yet).

Advice

Usually, I ask a fellow student for their advice of the week. However, for this week, I wanted to say something a little different.

I can give you what I think the best advice in the world is, but at the end of the day, you have to do and believe in what makes you happy.

So here is my advice: listen to yourself.

Listen to the things that make you happy, to the things that make you a better you.

From the rumblings of your gut to the strings of your heart, you know you better than anyone.

Final fall semester farewell

Friends, family, faculty, staff, etc.─none of this would be possible without you. I have seen the community grow a lot since the start of the semester. I am proud of the progress we continue to make as a university but more importantly, as a community.

My final farewell to you bodes happiness and good wishes.

Without you, there is no Bluffton, no matter who you are.

You belong, and you will always have a home here.

Thank you for sticking with The Wit, as we are working insanely hard to give you guys the best possible news we can.

On behalf of The Wit staff, I can graciously say: thank you.

As to your continual support and bright-minded spirit, we would be nowhere without our readers!

Hoping Christmas break is a well-deserved recovery from school work, grading and making hamburgers!

Best wishes,

Colten McCabe
