Beavers kick off winter sports

The Bluffton University women’s and men’s basketball teams started their first full week of practice.

The women’s basketball team expected to have another successful season, from losing just two starters from last year, consisting of Brianna Gillig who was named First-Team all HCAC and Emma Saltzman. Sammy Shardo (Findlay), Peyton Henry (Leipsic) and Morgan Smith (Arlington) will lead the beavers this coming season. Last season they finished 19-7 overall and 13-4 in conference play, while making it to the HCAC semi-finals.

Having two returners who made it on the HCAC honors will give them a push for the season, Morgan Smith first team and Kayla Prigge making it on the newcomer team. Last season they had the second best 3-point shooting percentage in the program’s history, and best percentage in the conference. They will be looking to make a repeat with help from their seven incoming freshmen.

With only a week into practice, they have their first scrimmage Wednesday, October 26 vs Ohio Northern at 7 p.m. They will officially start their season on November 12 vs Wooster.

The men’s basketball team look to improve on a new season. Having a big spot to fill after losing First Team All- HCAC Jameel Cosby.

Beavers return seven seniors to lead the team, including fifth year senior Kegan Owen (Indianapolis, Indiana). They bring in eight newcomers and a transfer to help make the offense run. Last season they were 6-17 overall and 2-13 in the HCAC.

The men’s basketball team will have their first scrimmage vs Kenyon on Friday, November 4. They start their season on Friday, November 11 vs Denison at 6 p.m.
