Centofanti’s Disney+ recommendations

Written by Nicole Centofanti

Disney released its streaming platform Disney+ for $6.99 a month, or if you have Verison Unlimited you get the service free for one year. I noticed after the service dropped Nov. 12 that many Bluffton students were getting it.

The streaming service has Marvel movies, Disney classics, Disney Channel shows and original movies, and of course Disney+ Originals. Here are five shows and five movies, in no particular order, on Disney+ I think you should give a chance when scrolling the service to find something to watch.

Shows

“Gargoyles”

The show “Gargoyles” came out in 1994, but I only recently discovered it. I heard many wonderful things about the show but had no way of watching it. When I got Disney+, “Gargoyles” is one of the first shows I am working my way through. I just started season three, and I have not been disappointed.

“Gargoyles” is about an ancient race of the mythological creatures of gargoyles that are stone during the day but come alive after the sun has set. Goliath, the leader, and what is left of his gargoyle clan lived in Scotland, then after being frozen in time for one thousand years reawaken in 1990s Manhattan where the show takes place.

“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”

“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” is a Disney+ Original show. It reminds me of the Fox show “Glee” but filmed in the style of “The Office.”

It is about a group of high schoolers who go to the school where the movie “High School Musical” was shot. Their drama teacher realizes the school has never done a production of “High School Musical,” so she decides that is what the musical is going to be.

This show is not a continuation of the original “High School Musical” movies. In fact “High School Musical” is a movie in the show just like it is in the real world.

“Kim Possible”

The next show I suggest watching is “Kim Possible.” I am recommending this show because it was one of my favorites when I was younger. Now, I realize maybe part of my liking to the show had something to do with the lead being a woman young girls could look up to.

“Kim Possible” is a cartoon that originally aired on Disney Channel between the years 2002 and 2007, and it follows Kim Possible, who is a high schooler whose after-school activities involve cheerleading and saving the world.

“Lilo and Stitch: The Series”

This is another show I remember watching as a kid and loving it. I really enjoyed learning about the lives of Lilo and Stitch after the events of the movie.

“Lilo and Stitch: The Series” is one of the many animated shows on Disney Channel that followed a movie. The show originally aired between 2003 and 2006, following the movie “Lilo and Stitch,” which came out in 2002.

This show follows Lilo and Stitch who go around Hawaii trying to find all of Stitch’s cousins before Gantu captures them.

“Good Luck Charlie”

“Good Luck Charlie” is on this list because I remember it being one of the shows my parents actually thought was not bad. I even remember my dad saying the jokes were pretty clever.

“Good Luck Charlie” is another show that aired on Disney Channel between 2010 and 2014, and is about a family of four, the Duncans, and later five and all of their shenanigans.

When the Duncans youngest daughter, Charlie, is born, the oldest daughter, Teddy, makes a video diary of her life so Charlie can learn from her mistakes. At the end of each video, Teddy signs off with “Good luck Charlie.”

Movies

“10 Things I Hate About You”

I recommend “10 Things I Hate About You” if you like romantic comedies as I do.

In this movie, which is based off of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” Kat is the older sister who does not date; however, her younger sister, Bianca ,wants to date. Their dad tells Bianca that she can start dating once Kat does. This results in Bianca paying a guy to ask her sister out.

“Sound of Music”

“Sound of Music” is one of the movie musicals I watched over and over again as a kid.

This movie was released in 1965 and is about a woman, Maria, who is sent to be the governess for the children of Captain Von Trapp. It takes place in Austria during World War II.

“Motocrossed”

“Motocrossed” is a Disney Channel Original Movie that aired in 2001. I recommend this movie because it follows a teenage girl taking on the typically male-dominated sport of motocross.

This movie follows Andi Carson, who takes her brother’s place in the motocross season after he is injured. Except for everyone outside of their family still thinks it’s her bother competing.

“The Aristocats”

I recommend this movie if you like adventure, romance and sibling banter. This Disney classic includes all three — place just in the lives of rich cats.

“The Aristocats” is about a family of cats trying to make their way back home after the butler takes them away. This is because he finds out the lady of the house has left her fortune to the cats and not him.

“Mulan”

One of the movies I had to put on this list is my all-time favorite Disney princess movie “Mulan.” This is because I felt like I related to her in the sense that she is trained in martial arts and so am I.

“Mulan” is about a Chinese woman who takes her father’s place in the Chinese Army because he is unable to serve; however, only men were allowed to partake, so she disguises herself as a man.
